José; Paco y Luis son tres viejos amigos que se disponen a pasar un día de caza juntos. Les acompaña Enrique, un joven de 20 años que asiste por primera vez a una cacería. El coto de caza es propiedad de Paco y, años atrás había sido el escenario de una batalla durante la Guerra Civil Española. Los tres amigos están pasando por etapas díficiles de sus vidas (problemas con el alcohol, separaciones…) y lo que en un principio parece un apacible día de caza en una tarde de verano se conviertirá en cruel enfrentamiento entre los tres hombres.

Nos encontramos ante una de las mejores películas de nuestra filmografía. Los actores, de gran prestigio en la época, forman un elenco excepcional. La maestría de Saura se hace patente en cada una de las escenas.  La película nos ofrece la peor cara de España, aquella en la que se reflejan las envidias, los odios y los más antiguos rencores. Considero que está película tiene cierto paralelismo con la literatura de Miguel Delibes, la misma en la que se dan cita todo tipo de traumas, rencores y resquemores en un país en el que las heridas no se han curado, pese a que la modernidad  de los sesenta se va haciendo lentamente un hueco en dicha sociedad.
