Una joven actriz francesa vive su última noche en Hiroshima acompañada por su amante japonés en la habitación de un hotel. Lo que a simple vista parece una simple aventura entre los dos personajes, poco a poco se va convirtiendo es un momento de gran intensidad y desacarga emocional, que hace a la actriz revivir una historia de amor imposible que vivió en el pasado, en Nevers (Francia) años atrás, durante la ocupación alemana. La fugaz relación amorosa se convierte en un proceso introspectivo en el cual la mujer revela , mediante mensajes de amor, sus sentimientos más profundos y le hace a su compañero parícipe de ellos, junto con una detallada reconstrucción del pasado, todo ello hasta entonces oculto.
Hiroshima, mon amour es una comprometida y singular película que se ha convertido en uno de los referentes iniciales de la nouvelle vague del cine francés de finales de los cincuenta. La reivindicación pacifista y los peligros ante una posible guerra nuclear, ambos de gran actualidad en el momento de la concepción del film, son algunos de los temas centrales de la cinta. Cabe destacar la participación en la realización de la película de la escritora francesa Marguerite Duras, de quien surgió inicialmente la historia tras un encuentro con Resnais y que escribió un excelente guión.
